Basque Science Games

A catalyst for science outreach

We turn scientific papers from the research centres of the Ibaeta campus into board and digital games, Basque first.

Games

Six games from six research papers of the Ibaeta campus: one per building. Coming soon.

  1. CIC nanoGUNE

    Centres: CIC nanoGUNE, Ikerbasque

Paper: Rapid Fabrication of Self-Propelled and Steerable Magnetic Microcatheters for Precision Medicine. Advanced Materials 38 (2026)
    doi:10.1002/adma.202506591

    Personalised and precision health

CIC nanoGUNE has developed a fast way to make magnetic microcatheters and microrobots. Steered by magnets, they travel through very narrow channels and could deliver cells or drugs exactly where needed.

  2. POLYMAT · Joxe Mari Korta and Ikerbasque

    Centres: POLYMAT, Ikerbasque

Paper: Body surface potential mapping of the cortico-muscular axis using smart textile electrode arrays. Nature Communications 17 (2026)
    doi:10.1038/s41467-026-75134-1

    Personalised and precision health

With the University of Cambridge, POLYMAT has created fabrics with conducting-polymer electrodes that pick up brain and muscle signals at once, from the skin. They could help in rehabilitation and prosthetics.

  3. CFM

    Centres: CFM, DIPC

Paper: Radiative-cooling concrete as a low-cost heat-rejection solution for Geo-thermal energy storage in hybrid ground-coupled heat pumps. Journal of Energy Storage 178 (2026)
    doi:10.1016/j.est.2026.123543

    Decarbonisation

In hot climates, geothermal heat pumps can warm up the ground. CFM has simulated a low-cost concrete that, from the rooftop, radiates surplus heat to the sky and reduces the drilling needed.

  4. Tecnun · University of Navarra

    Centres: Tecnun (University of Navarra)

Paper: A quantum generative model for in silico clinical trials using scarce training datasets. arXiv preprint, 2026
    doi:10.48550/arXiv.2608.28168

    Quantum technologies

Clinical trials for rare diseases often have few patients. At Tecnun, researchers used IBM's quantum computer in Donostia to generate virtual patients that complement such scarce data.

  5. Faculty of Chemistry · EHU

Centres: Faculty of Chemistry (EHU), POLYMAT

Paper: Sustainable Structural Hot-Melt Adhesives Enabled by Functionalized Crystalline Lamellae. Advanced Materials 38 (2026)
    doi:10.1002/adma.202518259

    Decarbonisation

Hot-melt glues are often weak and hard to recycle. Colorado State University, POLYMAT and the Faculty of Chemistry have made a strong one from renewable sources that can be recycled in a closed loop.

  6. DIPC

Centres: DIPC, CFM, Faculty of Chemistry (EHU)

Paper: Realization of two-dimensional discrete time crystals with anisotropic Heisenberg coupling. Nature Communications 17 (2026)
    doi:10.1038/s41467-025-67787-1

    Quantum technologies

A time crystal is quantum matter that, pushed at regular intervals, ticks to its own rhythm. DIPC and CFM researchers created one in two dimensions on an IBM quantum computer.
